Supplements

Some supplements I take (or have taken), what they do, why I buy them, maybe discounts.

Training

I purchase nearly all of my supplements related to physical training at Arlington Nutrition Corner and recommend that you do the same.

BCAAs

I would say probably one of the least controversial supplements in the fitness community. Branched-chain amino acids, or BCAAs, are available in a micronized form that can be made into a drink or mixed into other foods. BCAAs provide a lot of benefits that I can anecdotally say are there:

  • No sugars or caffeines unless added, so there should be no dehydration or grogginess associated with it's consumption even during training.

  • Many use safe artificial flavoring and sweeteners, which at least for me promote consumption during workouts and drive performance. It's also a great way to hit your water goals; unlike diet sodas, I count BCAA liquid against my overall water hydration goals for any given day.

Brands

I've been buying the Scivation Xtend brand flavored BCAAs for over half a year now (Glacial Grape is my favorite) and found the value to great!

Scientific Literature

From a study at Ahvaz Jundishapur University of Medical Sciences:

BCAA supplementation did not have any effect on the feeling of fatigue; however, it led to a favorable effect on fatigue substances, energy metabolites and muscle soreness substances. Therefore, it can be concluded that the ingestion of the BCAA can play a helpful role in the enhancement of the exercise performance.
